Alan was one of my oldest friends.  Known him since 1963.  We were both drummers in the marching band.
In recent times,  we would have dinner together  with our wives. We also both attended "Drummers Hang"s with other Memphis drummers.  I spoke to him the day before he passed when he wished me a happy birthday.

I will miss him terribly.

I have known Alan since childhood.  We took piano lessons from Mary Ella Tyler at WHS.  We played in many recitals.  I hated them, and I think Alan did too.  I reminded him at our recent WHS Class of 65 reunion at Graceland last year that my worst recital experience was when he performed right before me in a recital, and seemed to be lost totally.  It made me so nervous as I watched the "crash and burn" that when I followed him I was frozen.  I sat down at the piano and couldn't even think of the name of the song I was to play.  In what seemed like forever, but likely was only a few seconds, I thought of it and played it without a hitch, thanks to the Lord's GRACE!!!  Alan really got a laugh out of that story.  I think he likely remembered it too. We were pretty young at the time.  Though I never heard his band, I did hear that they were fabulous, and that he was an exceptional talent.  I was blessed to know him and share our many years together at WHS.  He was such a wonderful guy.  He will be missed greatly. I will always remember his wide smile.  When your memory of someone is a smile it is a pretty good picture of their nature and their well lived life.  My thoughts and prayers are with his family in this time of grief.

Does anyone know what happened with Alan at this time. He was a smile and a friend to a lot of us classmates over the years. RIP ALAN. God bless your family and spouse as they grieve.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Suzanne; his sons Jay Malinoski and wife Jacee, Jeffrey Copeland and wife Jaime, and Tony Terrell and wife Elena. He has 11 grandchildren. He was so proud of the men they grew up to be and the beautiful families that they built.
