Russell and I were among the "twelve-year seniors", meaning we started out together in the 1st grade. Russell was such a great guy. He was fun and kind. He was just "cool", like his entire family. His mom was one of the greatest WHS teachers ever!
To me the best reason for participating in organized athletics is the long hours of practice. It's there that young strangers are forced together, offering chances for friendships unavailable in classes or clubs. That's where I got to know Russell. It was really the only place I knew him, but it was five times a week . . . all winter long.
He was a strong competitor on the court, reserved in the locker room, but with a jock's rakish sense of humor. He was fun to be around.
He also shouldered well the added pressure of being a teacher's kid. He never flashed his advantage. He was one of us.

I will miss him.
